(All games have been cancelled)  BROTHERS Toowoomba will go back to the future this weekend when the Leprechauns take to the field against their counterparts from the Big Smoke – Brisbane Brothers – at Glenholme Park. Back in the 1970s and 80s the annual pre-season clash between Toowoomba Brothers (then All Whites) and “older brother” Brisbane Brothers was a keenly contested event. Brothers last won the coveted Brisbane Rugby League premiership in 1987 winning the last grand final before the Broncos entered the national competition which diminished the Brisbane local competition to a point. Brothers Brisbane faded into the wilderness soon after but in recent years thanks to the tireless work of club stalwarts the Leprechauns have rebuilt and this year will play competition football with the hope of gaining acceptance to the BRL comp next year. Sports consultant Justin Barlow, who is driving a bold bid for a Brothers team to be included in the NRL when the competition expands in 2018, said Brisbane Brothers up and running again was great for the Confraternity of Brothers clubs across Queensland. “It’s great that Brisbane Brothers are setting themselves up for a shot at the BRL,” he said. “Logan Brothers will represent in the BRL this year which proves the strength of an NRL tint, we have depth everywhere.”  Brothers Toowoomba club president Joe Hannant said this Saturday’s match would see a return to the annual clash of two of the more prominent Brothers clubs in Queensland.  “We are keen to make this an annual event with Brisbane again,” Mr Hannant said.  “The annual match will see the A Grade teams playing for the ‘Shillelagh’ which will be retained and displayed in the trophy cabinet of the winning club for the following year. “Player of the match will receive the Peter Gill Medal which will be presented by ‘Gilly’ himself after the game.”  A Toowoomba born and bred player, Peter Gill played for both Toowoomba Brothers and Brisbane Brothers before embarking on a successful NRL career with the St George Dragons and Gold Coast.  Three matches between Toowoomba and Brisbane Brothers will be played Saturday with an Under 15 game from 3-00pm, Under 18s from 5pm and Seniors from 6.30pm.
